Intelligence Analyst Role type: Permanent, full-time Location: Christchurch (Burnside) Salary range & band: General Salary Range E – $87,008 to $101,621 depending on skills and experience About the Role The Ministry for Primary Industries is seeking an Intelligence Analyst to join the Intelligence & Targeting Team. In this role you will plan, lead, and deliver intelligence products that target biosecurity risk and non‑compliance across import pathways. Your work will directly inform tactical, operational, and strategic decision makers across Biosecurity New Zealand. The work of an intelligence Analyst helps mitigate threats to New Zealand's biosecurity interests and help us protect New Zealand from biological harm. You will support tactical, operational, and strategic decisions, while working in a regulatory intelligence environment that differs from traditional agencies. You'll collect and analyse information, engage with stakeholders, and contribute to protecting New Zealand's biosecurity. The role offers strong support for professional development, and sits within a team that values wellbeing, curiosity, and collaboration. Key Responsibilities Keep track of domestic and global issues that challenge New Zealand's biosecurity Derive insights from complex data using intelligence methodologies and tools Negotiate with stakeholders to determine priorities for intelligence productsMaintain professionalism and seek feedback on intelligence quality and timeliness Build productive relationships across MPI, government and industry Demonstrate integrity in handling sensitive information Communicate clearly, especially in writing, and work well in a team Show curiosity, analytical thinking, and a reflective mindset Learn and apply biosecurity knowledge in a regulatory context Hold or be open to gain a New Zealand Diploma in Intelligence Analysis (to be completed in work time) About You You're a curious, reflective thinker who enjoys working with others to solve complex problems and support frontline decision makers. You're someone who is excited by the opportunity to apply your intelligence tradecraft in a regulatory setting, and keen to learn about biosecurity risks, import pathways, and the people who manage them. You're a strong communicator and thrive in environments that value learning, coaching, and collaboration. You're open to new experiences and enjoy getting to know your customers to understand how the role works. You may be from another government agency and want to dive into the breadth of experiences that MPI provides. We collaborate across regions and disciplines, using virtual tools to stay connected and build relationships. New team members are supported through mentoring, site visits and learning opportunities to build biosecurity knowledge. You must have a minimum ten‑year background history that can be verified and assessed by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine your suitability for a SECRET or TOP SECRET national security clearance (as applicable).
