Payroll Manager at University of Canterbury

Payroll Manager – University of Canterbury – Christchurch, NZ The University of Canterbury is looking for an experienced Payroll Manager to join its People and Culture team on a 12‑month fixed‑term basis, covering parental leave. This role offers a leadership opportunity within a large, values‑led organisation where accuracy, trust and service delivery are critical. We employ approximately 4,000‑4,500 staff. The payroll team, led by you, comprises about 10 specialists and support staff. You will maintain ongoing payroll delivery while steering the team through a period of change as the university moves toward a new system (Workday). You will also coordinate with People and Culture, Digital, Finance, auditors and external advisors. Key Responsibilities Lead, support and develop the payroll team Ensure accurate and timely fortnightly payroll delivery Oversee payroll compliance, PAYE, audit and quality assurance requirements Manage payroll risks, controls, reporting and business‑continuity processes Support effective use of PeopleSoft and related payroll systems Work closely with People and Culture, Digital, Finance, auditors and external advisors Provide visible, practical leadership during a period of systems change Qualifications & Experience Significant payroll experience within a large or complex organisation Proven people‑leadership experience Strong understanding of payroll legislation, PAYE, audit and compliance processes Experience with large payroll or HRMS systems, ideally PeopleSoft, Oracle, Workday or similar Sound judgement and strong problem‑solving ability Confidence working with senior stakeholders A calm, practical and collaborative leadership style Alignment with the university’s values and culture, promoting a positive and inclusive work environment Benefits Benefits available to staff.
