Job Description

General Manager, Communications Wellington City, New Zealand – Full time, on site. Overview Department of Internal Affairs (Te Tari Taiwhenua) delivers services and outcomes to all New Zealanders. The Communications Group works across programme communications, media relations, and support for official visits and events. The role leads this group, advising the Secretary of Internal Affairs and the Executive Leadership Team on strategic communications. Responsibilities Develop and deliver the Department’s communications strategy, ensuring a cohesive internal and external approach. Advise on strategic issues and support key initiatives of the Secretary. Lead a team of communications professionals and manage a broad portfolio from major programmes to media and high‑profile events. Deliver high‑quality strategic communications advice and maintain the Department’s profile. Qualifications Significant communications leadership experience within a large and/or complex public‑sector organisation or relevant private‑sector experience. Proven experience advising on strategic issues from a communications perspective. Experience working in large, complex, and diverse organisations. Demonstrated history of achievement in the development and delivery of high‑quality strategic communications advice. Experience leading and managing high‑performing communications teams.
