Job Description

An opportunity has arisen for a junior to intermediate lawyer to step into a fast‑paced, delivery‑focused assignment providing immediate support within a local government legal team. This is a role where your ability to work independently, apply sound judgement, and manage high‑volume statutory workflows will be critical. This engagement offers the chance to contribute meaningfully in a public sector environment managing time‑sensitive LGOIMA and Privacy Act matters. With a primarily remote setup and clear scope, it’s well suited to a capable contractor who thrives on ownership, pace, and delivering robust, defensible outcomes. The in‑house Legal Services team provides critical support across the organisation, navigating regulatory, statutory, and governance matters. The team is collaborative, pragmatic, and focused on enabling the organisation to operate effectively while managing legal risk in a transparent and accountable way. The Role This contract role will see you providing hands‑on legal support with a strong focus on managing statutory information requests and associated processes. You will take ownership of LGOIMA requests end‑to‑end, while also supporting Privacy Act matters and Ombudsman‑related work. Working closely with senior solicitors, you will play a key role in maintaining the flow and quality of legal outputs, ensuring requests are handled efficiently, accurately, and in line with legislative obligations. This is a practical role requiring confidence, initiative, and the ability to operate with minimal supervision in a high‑volume environment. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage LGOIMA requests end‑to‑end Assess incoming requests and determine appropriate responses Engage effectively with internal stakeholders to gather information Draft clear, accurate, and defensible responses Respond to and support Ombudsman inquiries and investigations Manage Privacy Act requests, including access and correction requests Undertake legal research to support decision‑making Draft legal correspondence, advice, and documentation About You Qualified lawyer (NZ admitted or eligible), ideally with 1–4+ years’ PQE Proven experience managing LGOIMA/OIA requests (essential) Experience with Privacy Act matters (essential) Exposure to Ombudsman processes or investigations is highly desirable Background in local government or broader public sector preferredAble to work independently and deliver at pace in a high‑volume environment Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities Sound judgement, particularly in politically sensitive or high‑profile matters Excellent written communication skills – clear, concise, and defensible Why This Role?
