Job Description
Overview We are seeking two Senior Planners to join the Poutiaki Taiao Environmental Planning team within the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). The role is a fixed‑term parental leave cover, running until August or September 2027, with flexibility to work from Palmerston North, Hamilton, Tauranga, Auckland or Christchurch. Key Responsibilities Provide technical expertise in planning and consenting work streams across the State Highway network. Oversee environmental compliance and consenting maintenance activities. Handle private plan changes and other Resource Management Act (RMA) policy work. Assess third‑party applications, including through FTAA processes (Section 95 and Section 176 responses for Land Use Developments). Respond to and consent emergency works. Assist principal planners with Roads of National Significance FTAA approvals. Represent NZTA at hearings, community meetings and other forums, providing advice and oversight to facilitate informed decision‑making. Required Skills and Experience Demonstrated experience with the RMA regulatory process across multiple regions and districts. Knowledge of relevant statutes such as the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act, Wildlife Act and Conservation Act. Experience drafting submissions, evidence, and presenting at hearings. Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including community consultation and engagement. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to tailor communication to diverse audiences. Effective time‑management and prioritisation in a time‑sensitive environment. Full Membership (or working toward) of the New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI). Willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori, tikanga, Te Reo Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi as it applies to the public sector. Salary and Benefits Appointment base salary between $111,051.00 and $141,898.00 per annum (pro rata), commensurate with skills and experience.
