Job Description
An exciting opportunity is available for a Senior Protection Engineer to join a well‑established electricity business in Wellington, supporting the operation, maintenance, and development of critical power infrastructure. This role will play a key part in the delivery of protection engineering solutions across distribution assets, supporting network reliability, safety, and future growth initiatives. The position offers exposure to a broad range of projects and operational activities within a collaborative and technically strong engineering environment. Responsibilities Lead protection engineering activities including fault studies, relay coordination and protection settings reviews. Develop and maintain protection philosophies, engineering standards and technical specifications. Review protection and control system designs to ensure compliance with technical requirements and industry standards. Investigate major faults and equipment failures, undertaking root cause analysis and recommending corrective actions. Support asset management, reliability improvement and long‑term infrastructure planning initiatives. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers across the business. Contribute to business cases, capital investment planning and engineering project delivery. Support the development of maintenance strategies for protection, communication and secondary systems. Liaise with internal stakeholders, consultants and contractors to ensure successful project outcomes. Prepare technical reports, recommendations and engineering documentation. Required Experience Experience in Protection Engineering within the power, utilities, renewables or heavy industrial sectors. Strong experience undertaking protection studies, fault analysis and relay coordination. Knowledge of protection relays, secondary systems, SCADA integration and commissioning activities. Experience using power system analysis and protection engineering software such as PowerFactory, CYME, ETAP, PSCAD or similar. Understanding of asset management, reliability engineering and risk‑based decision making. Knowledge of IEC 61850 and modern protection and control systems would be highly regarded. Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence technical outcomes. Qualifications Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. Chartered Engineer status (or working towards Chartership) would be advantageous. #J-18808-Ljbffr
