Job Description
Overview We are a learning support organisation headquartered in Greymouth, and we’re looking for a dedicated Special Education Adviser. The role is permanent and full‑time, and involves supporting children and young people with complex educational and behavioural needs across the region. Responsibilities Work as part of a trans‑disciplinary team to meet a child’s complex needs. Collaborate with educators, parents, caregivers and whānau to enhance understanding of the child and their behaviours. Develop, implement and monitor a personalised learning plan. Assist adults around the child to adapt the learning environment for safer and more effective behaviour management. Support the child to develop pro‑social responses and enhance participation, wellbeing and learning outcomes. Facilitate access to wider services (speech and language therapy, local agencies) in response to individual needs. Promote inclusive practices in schools and other educational settings. Qualifications Qualified and fully registered NZ teacher, or eligible for, or working towards eligibility to complete a New Zealand educational psychology internship. Additional qualifications in Learning Support are an advantage. Demonstrable knowledge, experience and skills in supporting children and young people with severe and challenging behaviours. Willingness to work in collaborative partnership with other professionals, agencies, families and the sector. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including sustaining productive professional relationships. Commitment to evidence‑based interventions that demonstrate inclusive education practice and raise student achievement. Sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity and commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. Willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct. Salary and Benefits Salary range: $69,966 – $95,716 per annum plus KiwiSaver. Our Group and Team Learning Support is a critical part of the Sector Enablement and Support Group in the Ministry. We lead the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential. Our Special Education Adviser specialists work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.
