Job Description
Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand – Permanent part‑time position (0.5FTE). About the Role We are looking for a motivated Specialist Intensivist to provide effective and high‑quality care to the Northland community. The successful candidate will work in the Department of Intensive Care Medicine, participate in teaching and training resident medical staff, and be actively involved in the consultant on‑call roster for ICU. The Intensive Care Unit is a modern nine‑bed department that receives 525 patient admissions per year, with over 40% mechanically ventilated. The unit provides an ICU outreach service and is accredited for training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine. Currently, eight Intensivists contribute to a 1:9 roster, supported by eight registrars and one SHO providing 24/7 cover. Patients seen daily include paediatrics and major trauma, and the department also provides medical and nursing cover for the flight retrieval service in conjunction with Northern Rescue Helicopter Limited, overseeing approximately 480 helicopter transfers per year. About the Location Whangarei offers a warm climate, winterless conditions, excellent schools, affordable housing, and scenic coastal recreation. It is just a two‑hour drive or a 25‑minute flight from Auckland. The Northland region is known for its friendly community and natural beauty. About you Specialist (or locum tenens) registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) in Intensive Care Medicine or an associated vocational scope of practice. Eligibility for or possession of FCICM or an equivalent qualification. Open to advanced trainees nearing completion of training. Ability to assist with MCNZ registration for overseas or unregistered candidates, if applicable.
