Job Description

The Opportunity Apply your technical knowledge across the planning spectrum. We have an opportunity for two Senior Planners to join the Poutiaki Taiao Environmental Planning team for a fixed‑term parental leave cover until August/September 2027. The role is flexible to be based in Palmerston North, Hamilton, Tauranga, Auckland or Christchurch. Key Responsibilities Oversee environmental compliance and consenting maintenance activities across the State Highway network. Handle private plan changes and other RMA policy work. Assess third‑party applications, including through FTAA processes (Section95 and Section176 responses for Land Use Developments). Respond to and consent emergency works. Assist principal planners with Roads of National Significance FTAA approvals. Build and work with key local stakeholders to determine land use decisions. Represent NZTA at hearings, community meetings and other forums and provide advice and oversight to enable transparent and informed decisions. Support the organisation for statutory consents and approvals. Salary Appointment base salary is between $111,051.00 and $141,898 per annum (pro rata), commensurate with skills and experience. Essential Qualifications and Experience Demonstrated experience in the Resource Management Act (RMA) regulatory process, including working across multiple regions and districts, and the ability to communicate the process to non‑RMA experienced people. Knowledge of other relevant statutes such as the Heritage NewZealand PouhereTaonga Act, the Wildlife Act and the Conservation Act. Experience drafting submissions and presenting evidence at hearings. Experience working with internal and external stakeholders and managing relationships, including undertaking community consultation and engagement. Understanding of the transport sector and the role of the transport network is desirable. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to tailor communication styles appropriately to different audiences and situations. Ability to manage time effectively, prioritise work and handle competing priorities in a time‑sensitive environment. Full membership (or working towards) of NZPI. Knowledge of or willingness to gain understanding of TeAoMāori and promote tikanga and TeReoMāori. Knowledge of or willingness to gain an appreciation of teTiritioWaitangi as it applies in the public sector. About the Team The Poutiaki Taiao/Environmental Planning team works with and for Aotearoa NewZealand to influence quality development, safe outcomes and protect public investment in the transport system.
