Job Description
Manage a team of Rangers working on conservation of New Zealand's rarest endemic breeding bird. Full time, fixed‑term role September2026– March2027 with flexible working options available. Overview The NewZealand FairyTern (Taraiti) is NewZealand's rarest endemic breeding bird, with fewer than 45 birds left in the population. During the summer nesting season a team of nine temporary and four permanent Rangers works to enable the Taraiti to nest, breed and rear its chicks with minimal disturbance. The supervisor will lead this team throughout the season, ensuring successful conservation work while safeguarding staff well‑being. Responsibilities Supervise work delivery – understand, schedule, oversee and ensure work is completed safely and on‑time. Collaborate – work with permanent staff, Operations Managers, community groups and stakeholders. Develop team capability – ensure the team has the training, skills, capacity and overall capability to deliver planned work. Manage staff roster to match essential work with team capacity. People leadership – assign tasks, set clear expectations and monitor progress, inspire trust and respect, and promote continuous improvement. Address critical issues – identify safety and other concerns and raise them appropriately. Coordinate out‑of‑hours support for emergency situations, including occasional evenings and weekends. Qualifications Experience leading or supervising people is essential, along with knowledge of good leadership principles. Comfortable engaging and working in partnership with iwi and tangata whenua, and able to collaborate with iwi, hapū and whānau. Strong relationship‑building skills, able to interact with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. Organisational skills – ability to manage multiple people and work programs. High personal and professional ethics, confidentiality and dedication to public service principles. Commitment to health and safety and knowledge of field safety principles (bonus). Basic fitness and ability to travel on foot in coastal areas. Availability for occasional evening and weekend work. Desirable: broad knowledge of NewZealand conservation management and interest in threatened species; prior involvement with the Taraiti programme is beneficial. Benefits Salary range $80,695–$101,951, based on skills and experience. Full‑time fixed‑term employment from September2026to March2027. Flexible working options, five‑day roster with two days off per week and weekends covered. Support from Principal Ranger and permanent staff; induction and training provided.
