Job Description

Kaitohutohu - Wāteatanga | Advisor – Accessibility This fixed‑term (through April 2027) full‑time role is based in Wellington, Auckland or Christchurch, and offers strong career development opportunities. The position is on site at Statistics New Zealand. As part of the Specialist Data Capability Team, you will support accessibility for disabled people across Aotearoa New Zealand. You will build trusted relationships with colleagues and external partners, influence major national initiatives such as the Census, the Household Disability Survey, and key statistical releases, and lead the embedding of accessibility from design to delivery. Your work will help ensure that Statistics New Zealand’s services and data products are accessible, inclusive, and meaningful for disabled people and their whānau. What you bring Experience with accessibility tools, technologies, or practices, or a strong understanding of barriers faced by disabled people. A collaborative approach and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders. Experience supporting accessible and inclusive solutions that improve participation and outcomes for Māori, disabled people, and their whānau. An understanding of intersectionality and how different identities and lived experiences can influence access, participation, and outcomes. Confidence communicating with a wide audience, including facilitating discussions, presenting information, and sharing advice. Curiosity about data and information and an appreciation of how quality data can support better outcomes for people and communities. The ability to navigate ambiguity, think critically, and contribute practical solutions to complex challenges. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to translate insights into clear, actionable advice. Demonstrated competency in mātauranga Māori, tikanga and application of the Treaty of Waitangi in a workplace setting. Proficiency in te reo Māori, or a strong commitment to developing te reo Māori capability. A demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and applying cultural capability in practice. Transferable skills and experience gained from paid or unpaid work, such as education, hospitality, technology, public service, marae, the arts, community involvement, volunteering or whānau responsibilities.
