Job Description

Principal Advisor Publishing – National Office, Wellington As Principal Advisor Publishing, you will provide trusted strategic advice to the Manager Judicial Libraries, the Judiciary and senior stakeholders on the publication of court and tribunal decisions. Working at the intersection of law, publishing and public service, you will help ensure decisions are published accurately, consistently and in accordance with legal and judicial requirements, supporting public access to justice and confidence in NewZealand’s courts. You will be a trusted expert on complex, sensitive and high‑profile publication matters, providing advice on legal, operational and reputational risks while shaping the policies, standards and practices that underpin judgement publishing. You will use data and insights to identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement, lead strategic initiatives and projects, and contribute to the ongoing development of the systems and services that support publishing. A key part of the role will be building strong relationships with members of the Judiciary, judicial staff and Ministry colleagues, while providing expert editorial guidance, mentoring and capability development to publishing staff. Through your leadership and influence, you will help ensure publishing practices remain responsive to legislative change, emerging risks and evolving best practice. Skills and Experience To succeed in this role, you will bring a NewZealand law degree and significant experience working with legal information, along with the ability to interpret and apply complex legislation, court rules and judicial directions. You will be a trusted adviser who can provide clear strategic guidance on sensitive issues, build credibility with senior stakeholders and translate complex legal concepts into practical advice. You will combine strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with excellent judgement, using data and insights to identify risks, opportunities and service improvements. You will also have experience developing policies, standards or operational frameworks, mentoring and supporting others, and working effectively in a fast‑paced environment with competing priorities. Strong communication, organisational and digital skills, together with a flexible and pragmatic approach, will be essential to your success.
