We are looking for a Fire Engineer to join our Building Consenting Unit to provide specialist fire engineering advice across a wide range of building consent, compliance and regulatory matters. This opportunity has become available following a planned retirement within our Engineering Services Team. You will be joining an experienced and supportive in‑house team where technical knowledge is shared, professional judgement is valued, and your work will contribute directly to safe and practical building outcomes across Christchurch. About the role | Ko te mahi nei Reviewing fire engineering matters associated with building consent applications, supporting staff with technical advice and working with applicants, consultants and other professionals to resolve complex issues. Ensuring that fire safety designs and technical matters are assessed in a clear, consistent, and practical way, while also contributing to technical quality, mentoring, inspections, audits, and continuous improvement across fire engineering review work. Your work will cover a broad range of projects and technical matters, including new and existing buildings, commercial and complex developments, fire engineering reports, alternative solutions, Fire Engineering Briefs, inspections and compliance matters. You will work alongside specialists across fire, structural, civil, geotechnical and mechanical/HVAC engineering, as well as building consent processors, inspectors and compliance staff. Together, the team supports clear, consistent and well‑reasoned regulatory decision‑making. About you | Ko Koe Tēnei CPEng status and relevant professional membership, such as Engineering New Zealand membership or equivalent. Strong fire engineering background, supported by a relevant qualification or significant fire safety engineering experience. Experience across New Zealand building projects, ideally including commercial or complex buildings. A good understanding of the Building Act, Building Code, compliance pathways and fire safety requirements. Experience with fire engineering reports, alternative solutions, performance‑based design or the Fire Engineering Brief process. A current full driver licence. What's in it for you? Position – Full‑time Permanent Position. Location – This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices, 53 Hereford Street. Salary band – $115,466 – $128,295 per annum based on a 40‑hour week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
