Technical Business Analyst - Datascape

Datacom
Auckland,Auckland,New Zealand Full Time

About the Role

We're looking for a technically minded Business Analyst to join our Datascape team. This isn't a standard requirements-gathering role. It's for someone who can turn product ideas, customer processes, and technical detail into clear, ready-to-build specifications.

You'll work with our existing Datascape product, real customer processes, and new AI-assisted ways of working. You won't just write down what people ask for. You'll understand the process, spot gaps, test assumptions early, and make sure the specification is right before the work moves forward.

This role suits someone with strong BA skills, real technical credibility, and a practical interest in how AI can improve delivery. You may have worked as a developer, tester, technical analyst, or implementation consultant. What matters most is that you understand how software is built and how to write specs that lead to easier generation of downstream artifacts.

What You Will Do

  • Act as the key bridge between Product, Engineering, QA, Professional Services , making sure work moves smoothly from idea to ready-to-build specification.
  • Own and improve how work moves from analysis to specification, making sure it's clear, prioritised, and ready before delivery starts.
  • Use business process mapping as the starting point for requirements - map how things work now and how they should work and check this with customers.
  • Turn processes, product direction, and technical detail into clear specs, acceptance criteria, and scenarios.
  • Help set a strong "Definition of Ready" by spotting missing detail, unclear assumptions, and testing gaps before work moves ahead.
  • Work with Product to understand the problem, while focusing your own work on getting the process and specification right.
  • Work with Engineering to clarify technical impacts, integrations, data, and constraints.
  • Work with QA early so requirements are testable and edge cases are clear.
  • Draw on Professional Services to understand how customers really use Datascape.
  • Help design and run AI-assisted ways of working, with the right structure, quality checks, and human review points.
  • Build reusable templates, examples, and knowledge that make future work easier.
  • Help improve how the team works across the delivery lifecycle.
  • Run workshops that drive decisions and get people aligned.
  • Write clear, useful documentation that helps teams decide and deliver.
  • Get into technical detail when needed - this role isn't for someone who avoids it.

What You Will Bring

Experience

  • Proven BA experience in software, product, or technology delivery.
  • A technical background or strong technical confidence - for example as a developer, tester, technical analyst, or implementation consultant.
  • Experience across the full software delivery lifecycle.
  • Experience turning business processes and product needs into clear specifications.
  • Experience with agile delivery and how work flows into backlogs, stories, and testing.
  • Experience with existing products, not just new builds.
  • Some exposure to AI-assisted delivery or automation is a real plus.
  • Local government or complex enterprise software experience would be helpful.

Skills

  • Strong BA basics: process mapping, requirements, facilitation, and specification writing.
  • Clear process thinking - able to map how things work and turn that into requirements.
  • A sharp eye for gaps, unclear assumptions, and risks.
  • Technical curiosity and credibility with engineers, without becoming a bottleneck.
  • Clear communication with both technical and non-technical people.
  • Good judgement in unclear situations, and the confidence to say when something isn't ready.
  • A practical interest in and opinion on how AI can help with analysis, specs, testing, and knowledge.
  • A collaborative mindset and a genuine interest in improving how the team works.

What Good Looks Like

You'll be doing well when:

  • Product ideas turn into clear, ready-to-build specifications.
  • Customer processes are understood before the detail is finalised.
  • Requirements can be traced from process to spec to build to test.
  • Engineering has enough context to build with confidence.
  • QA can test the intended behaviour without guessing.
  • Assumptions, decisions, and risks are visible early.
  • Rework from unclear analysis goes down.
  • Datascape knowledge becomes easier to reuse.
  • AI tools are used well, with the right checks.
  • The delivery process becomes clearer and more reliable.

Qualifications

  • A degree in IT, Computer Science, Business, Engineering, or a related field is desirable.
  • Relevant experience can count instead of formal qualifications.
  • Certifications in business analysis, agile, or AI are useful but not essential.

Why This Role Matters

Datascape is an established product used in complex local government settings. Good delivery takes more than writing stories. It means understanding real customer processes, product limits, and technical impacts before work goes too far.

This role helps shape and check work before it reaches Engineering. It also helps build better, AI-assisted ways of working - where clear processes, reusable knowledge, and good judgement come together to improve quality and reduce rework.

It's a role for someone who wants to do excellent BA work while helping build a better way of working for the future.
