\n About the Role\n

We are inviting expressions of interest from suitably qualified scientists for a full‑time Scientific Officer in the Newborn Screening section of LabPlus, Auckland. The role involves working closely with the current Scientific Officer and includes:

    \n
  • Routine running and troubleshooting of newborn screening assays, including in‑house expanded screening using tandem mass spectrometry.
  • \n
  • Contributing to the development of new assays.
  • \n
  • Training and mentoring staff.
  • \n
  • Leading the interpretation and reporting of results.
  • \n
  • Liaising with clinical staff and ensuring Prevention Directorate accreditation requirements are met.
  • \n
  • Maintaining and developing the in‑house middleware.
  • \n
  • Reviewing newborn screening protocols.
  • \n

The position is based in the Specialist Chemical Pathology department at LabPlus, a nationally accredited IANZ laboratory located in Auckland. LabPlus operates as a major referral laboratory for New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

About You\n

We look for a candidate with:

\n
    \n
  • A current annual practising certificate and registration (or qualifications that will lead to registration) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand.
  • \n
  • An MSc, PhD, or higher scientific qualification.
  • \n
  • Advanced knowledge of tandem mass spectrometry with at least 2 years of hands‑on experience.
  • \n
  • Highly developed communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • \n
  • Excellent organisational and advanced computer skills, including experience working with large data sets.
  • \n
  • Experience with research and method development that has led to publications or presentations.
  • \n
