About the Role Stantec’s Water team in New Zealand is engaged in projects that benefit communities nationwide, including drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, and groundwater. We focus on dams and hydropower to support resilience and renewable energy solutions. The Senior Power Engineer will work within the Electrical Engineering team, based in one of our 15 offices in New Zealand. The role involves electrical and multidisciplinary projects across New Zealand, Australia, and the South Pacific, covering substations, treatment plants, and transmission and distribution systems. Responsibilities Lead the preparation of electrical detailed design drawing packages for utility interconnection, substation design, system protection and coordination, power distribution, standby power systems, MV and LV distribution, and DC systems. Conduct and review electrical design calculations and protection settings. Assist with proposal requests, development of design and construction engineering fees, and report writing. Complete condition assessments for various facilities, including report writing and client meetings. Prepare contract documentation such as equipment and installation specifications, cable/conduit schedules, sub‑contractor requisitions, scope of work and bill of materials. Participate in technical review and quality control of design drawings and documents, ensuring compliance with New Zealand and Australian electrical codes and standards. Support tendering and construction activities by responding to RFIs, reviewing drawings, evaluating electrical reports, conducting site inspections, preparing testing plans, and evaluating change orders. Coordinate electrical system designs with other engineering disciplines, vendors, and design team members. Qualifications Experienced Electrical/Power Engineer with knowledge in power generation, protection and/or distribution. Strong working knowledge of medium voltage design, system protection and control, standby power options, and detailed design deliverables. Experience in generation sites, transmission and distribution power systems, renewable energy projects, or water and wastewater treatment facilities. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work individually and within a team, and to mentor junior colleagues. Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and deliver results within deadlines. Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. Seven years of electrical design experience. Proven experience producing MV power distribution and protection designs for large‑scale projects. Strong knowledge of New Zealand and Australian electrical codes and standards. Project management experience is desirable.
