Job Description

Location Hutt Hospital Contract Permanent, Part Time & Full Time - Rostered and Rotating About the Role The Registered Nurse (RN) role meets the needs of people and whanau accessing our services using contemporary nursing care that is safe, appropriate and effective. Care is based on comprehensive assessment, continuity, and person/whānau centric, culturally appropriate and evidence‑based practice. Quality improvement and patient safety are important parts of this role. All nurses employed by Te Whatu Ora must have Registration with the New Zealand Nursing Council and maintain a current annual practising certificate as a Registered Nurse. Application to the Hutt Valley district Professional Development and Recognition Programme (PDRP) at competent, proficient or expert level is required. The RN must attend the generic orientation, yearly core competencies and maintain area‑specific competency requirements. The RN works within the Hutt Valley District nursing and midwifery standards & criteria of care and professional practice. The RN responds to the changing needs of the district, performs other tasks as required, contributes to the implementation of district and nursing goals and values, and promotes Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley as a centre of excellence for nursing practice. About the Team / Service / Location Hutt Hospital is a busy 260‑bed secondary facility providing services for Lower and Upper Hutt cities. It hosts five tertiary regional and sub‑regional services and an emergency department (ED) that manages approximately 80,000 presentations each year. The ED includes a 10‑bed Minor Injuries Unit and a child‑friendly “Tree Hutt” area. The department serves a diverse population with high proportions of Māori, Pasifika, and older adults with complex health needs. Common presentations include: Trauma: Accidents and falls in the workplace or road traffic accidents. Medical Conditions: Acute heart attacks, strokes, infections, or complications from chronic conditions such as diabetes and asthma. Mental Health Issues: Anxiety, depression, and suicidal crises requiring immediate intervention. Paediatric Cases: Viral respiratory infections, dehydration, or injuries from play or accidents. The ED team is led by a Nurse Manager and Clinical Head of Emergency Medicine, working in partnership to oversee daily operations and strategic direction. The team includes medical professionals, registered nurses, healthcare assistants, administrative personnel and volunteers. About You Key qualifications and attributes: Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) and a current Annual Practicing Certificate. Understanding of TeTiriti oWaitangi and its implementation in nursing. Commitment to equitable outcomes for Māori. Ongoing learning and development, including attainment/maintenance of PDRP, NZRC advance level6 or Australasian Triage Qualification (not essential).
