Animal Welfare Office | TE TARI ORANGA KARAREHE – Health and Safety Compliance The Animal Welfare Office (AWO) supports biomedical research activities at the University of Otago. We uphold the highest international standards for the welfare and ethical treatment of research and teaching animals, working closely with scientists conducting pioneering research. Role / Te mahi As a Clinical Veterinarian you will work in a team to support the Animal Welfare Officer with a high level of animal care and welfare. Your responsibilities include providing clinical veterinary advice, training staff and students, implementing animal care systems, and prescribing medicines in compliance with the ACVM Act 1997. Responsibilities Prepare and assist with the implementation of animal care and use systems across the university as required. Provide veterinary clinical guidance on animal use protocols and support research staff and animal technicians. Prescribe veterinary medicines for research and welfare in compliance with the ACVM Act 1997. Deliver clinical training to staff and students. Performs rostered on‑call duties as part of the wider Animal Welfare team. Qualifications Registered veterinary qualification with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand. Recent clinical experience with small animals. Great communication and interpersonal skills. Access to a vehicle and a current driver’s licence is required. Preferred Experience Experience with research and laboratory animals (not essential). Interest in research combined with a desire to explore a new discipline. Employment Details This is a permanent, part‑time (15 hours per week) position located in Ōtautahi, Christchurch. The position will include rostered on‑call duties.
