About the role Lead financial excellence that helps protect Aotearoa's unique natural and cultural heritage. As Business Accounting Manager you will lead a team of trusted finance professionals who provide strategic advice, financial leadership, and commercial insight to operational leaders across the Department. You will play a key role in ensuring sound financial decision‑making, driving continuous improvement, and enabling the successful delivery of conservation outcomes. Responsibilities Lead and develop a team of Business Accountants to deliver high‑quality financial advice, planning, budgeting and performance reporting. Partner with Operations Directors and managers to provide strategic financial insight that supports effective decision‑making and organisational performance. Drive continuous improvement by strengthening financial systems, processes, service delivery and innovation across the finance function. Ensure robust financial governance through quality assurance of business cases, compliance monitoring and proactive risk management. Build strong relationships across DOC, contributing specialist expertise, organisational priorities and partnerships, including supporting meaningful engagement with Māori. Qualifications and Experience A Chartered Accountant (or equivalent professional accounting qualification) with significant experience in financial leadership. Proven experience leading and developing high‑performing, inclusive teams while building capability and collaboration. Strong strategic thinking, commercial acumen and the ability to influence and partner with senior leaders. Extensive experience in financial planning, budgeting, management reporting, business case development and financial governance. Sound knowledge of GAAP, government financial management frameworks and risk management practices. Experience using enterprise financial systems such as SAP (or similar ERP platforms) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills. A continuous improvement mindset, with experience driving innovation and improving systems and processes. An understanding of TeTiritioWaitangi and its significance in the context of conservation and public service.
