Job Description

Overview Hands‑on conservation role on Rakiura Stewart Island. Full‑time, short‑term position from 21 September 2026 to 15 January 2027. About the role Research Technician to conduct research on the Critically Endangered Pukunui/Southern New Zealand Dotterel during the breeding season. Responsibilities Conduct extensive field surveys. Monitor birds and nests. Set up nest cameras. Collect, manage and enter data. Summarise data and report. Organise and lead field trips. Qualifications and experience Strong back‑country experience with off‑track navigation skills. Experience working independently in remote, exposed locations. GIS mapping skills. Report writing and analysis. Experience leading projects or teams. Bird monitoring experience. Data collection and collation skills. Good physical fitness and able to carry a heavy pack. Easy‑going with good interpersonal skills. Desirable Relevant tertiary level qualification. Bird handling and banding. Work arrangements Full‑time, fixed term. 10‑days on / 4‑days off roster. Based on Rakiura Stewart Island while on duty; fieldwork in small huts and campsites. Off‑duty travel at own expense; DOC provides ferry travel between Invercargill and Rakiura for rostered shifts. Benefits Salaried position: $65,590–$76,589 (depending on skills and experience). Eligible applicants must hold a valid NewZealand work visa covering the employment duration.
