We’re looking for an Environmental Laboratory Supervisor to join our team in our Christchurch based Civil Engineering laboratory. In this role, you’ll lead day‑to‑day environmental laboratory operations, support quality testing and reporting, and help ensure our environmental and infrastructure work is backed by accurate, reliable data. About the role The Environmental Laboratory carries out testing on groundwater, drinking water, soil contamination, stack emissions, and air quality. This is a hands‑on leadership role where you’ll oversee day‑to‑day laboratory activities, support your team by staying involved in testing, and help keep standards high across testing, reporting, and compliance. You’ll work closely with operational teams and stakeholders to make sure the lab runs smoothly and delivers results people can rely on. There’s also some away work involved from time to time. It’s a great fit for someone who can bring a relaxed, low‑ego leadership style while still knowing when to lift the bar and keep things on track. Good work in this role means leading by example, backing your team, and always looking for ways to improve. Key responsibilities Lead and coordinate environmental‑testing technicians so work is delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards. Plan and allocate day‑to‑day environmental‑testing workloads. Act as the main point of contact for environmental‑testing requests, ensuring agreed delivery times for test results are met and clients are kept informed. Ensure test methods, ISO17025, IANZ and Laboratory Quality Manual requirements are consistently followed and supported through audits and proficiency testing. Oversee equipment calibration and maintenance. Manage occasional away work as required. Qualifications Proven experience in an environmental setting (water sampling, soil contamination, stack emissions, personal monitoring or air quality). Experience leading or supervising people, with a collaborative and down‑to‑earth style. Current member of a relevant industry group. Strong knowledge of laboratory quality systems, testing procedures and compliance requirements. Great organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise work and keep things moving. A proactive, safety‑focused mindset and a genuine interest in developing people and improving processes. Benefits At Fulton Hogan, we genuinely care about the wellbeing of our people and giving them the tools and opportunities they need to succeed and grow with us. You’ll have access to: Medical insurance and life insurance after the eligibility period. KiwiSaver employer contributions after service milestones, up to 7%.
