New Zealand Anaesthetics and ICU Permanent Consultant TBC An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Anaesthetist to join a collaborative and supportive anaesthesia team in New Zealand. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality perioperative care across elective and emergency settings, working closely with multidisciplinary teams. This role offers a broad scope of practice, including anaesthesia, critical care, pain management, and service development within a dynamic clinical environment. Main Duties and Responsibilities Provide anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgical procedures across a range of specialities. Conduct pre-operative assessments through anaesthesia clinics, ensuring safe and effective perioperative planning. Participate in perioperative and post-operative management of patients in ICU, HDU, and ward settings. Support the stabilisation and preparation of critically ill patients requiring transfer to tertiary centres. Deliver out-of-hours anaesthesia services, including support to maternity, emergency department, theatres, and critical care services. Provide expert advice on acute and chronic pain management strategies. Participate in the on-call rota and emergency response services. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, high-quality patient care. Contribute to teaching and supervision of junior doctors and allied health professionals. Engage in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives. Person Specification Qualifications & Registration Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent). Eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) in Anaesthesia (or eligibility for provisional vocational registration). Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or equivalent. Experience Experience in anaesthesia across elective and emergency surgical settings. Experience in perioperative and critical care management. Ability to manage complex and acutely unwell patients independently. Minimum 1 year of NHS experience. Experience in paediatric anaesthesia. Experience in critical care or recent resuscitation and acute care exposure. Experience in interhospital transfer of critically ill patients. Strong clinical decision-making and procedural skills in anaesthesia. Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
