SQL DBA

This is a hands-on role requiring collaboration with stakeholders to modernise and optimise the database environmentWe are seeking an experienced SQL Database Administrator (DBA) contractor to join our team on client site (in Dunedin) and play a key role in delivering a critical SQL Server upgrade project . This is a hands-on role requiring close collaboration with technical teams and business stakeholders to modernise and optimise the database environment.\n
Key Responsibilities \n

\n
• Lead and execute upgrades across SQL Server environments (including planning, testing, and deployment)
\n
• Work closely with stakeholders to understand business requirements and minimise disruption during upgrades
\n
• Assess existing database infrastructure and recommend improvements
\n
• Perform risk analysis, backup planning, and rollback strategies for upgrade activities
\n
• Ensure database performance, availability, and security throughout the upgrade lifecycle
\n
• Troubleshoot issues arising during upgrade processes and implement fixes swiftly
\n
• Document procedures, configurations, and upgrade outcomes
\n
• Provide knowledge transfer and support post-upgrade
\n

Required Skills & Experience \n

\n
• Proven experience as a SQL Server DBA in enterprise environments
\n
• Strong hands-on experience with SQL Server upgrades and migrations
\n
• Expertise in: \n
  \n
  • SQL Server (multiple versions)
  \n
  • Backup/restore, high availability (e.g., Always On, clustering)
  \n
  • Performance tuning and optimisation
  \n
\n
• Ability to work directly with technical and non-technical stakeholders
\n
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills
\n
• Experience working in onsite, collaborative project environments
\n

Desirable Skills \n

\n
• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure SQL, AWS RDS)
\n
• Familiarity with automation or scripting (PowerShell, T-SQL)
\n
• Knowledge of security and compliance best practices
\n
