Job Details: Cubic Defence New Zealand Senior Mechanical Engineer role contributes mechanical engineering into multi‑disciplinary product development teams. The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, developing and implementing mechanical designs, performing complex mechanical engineering duties following designated standards and procedures. They will be involved in all stages of mechanical and process design, from conceptualization to manufacture and successful customer delivery, plus through life sustainment. They will work closely with other engineering disciplines, especially the Production and Testing teams. This position will report to the Engineering Director, matrix report for assigned tasks to an assigned Program Manager / Project Engineer and typically works under general supervision and direction.

Purpose of the Role\n

Conduct mechanical engineering activities within a multi‑disciplinary multi‑national engineering team; conduct product and product development planning activities; develop and design mechanical components and subsystems suited to military training and procurement, configuration management, quality assurance and regulatory requirements; ensure complementary product and manufacturing process design to ensure a product is appropriately designed for cost effective manufacture through life; actively facilitate transfer of products from design to manufacturing by generating a complete manufacturing package; provide support throughout the life cycle of the product to maintain the production of a quality product efficiently.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Product development and design of mechanical components within the company.

  • Design Process framework, generating product design, review, integration and test artefacts.
  • \n
  • Participate in Product Design Reviews with internal and external reviewers to ensure products are designed and produced in line with best design and manufacturing practices and delivered right first time.
  • \n
  • Assembly of prototypes and engineering validation samples, checking and cross‑referencing of the BOMs, BOM structure, drawings and part numbers to ensure accurate product definition and configuration control.
  • \n
  • Provide a formal report on the prototype and pre‑production assemblies, identifying issues that need attention with recommendations to mitigate manufacturing risks.
  • \n
  • Generate the manufacturing package for production and sub‑contractors that include assembly instruction (TP), optimisation of the production process, minimisation of overall timing costs and reduction of manufacturing risk.
  • \n
  • Analyse the product assembly times to quantify labour content (man‑hours) and sub‑assembly process times.
  • \n
  • Identify, design and acquire jigs, tools and test equipment required for production.
  • \n
  • Train the production teams on assembly process techniques and use of unique equipment jigs and fixtures.
  • \n
  • Support the pre‑production run processes managed by the Production Team Leader to ensure procedures in the TP’s are strictly followed or amended if necessary.
  • \n
  • Update the TP’s and recommend changes to BOMs and drawings to reflect desired best production practice.
  • \n
  • Investigate, evaluate and introduce new product materials and manufacturing processes to improve product quality and reduce life‑cycle cost.
  • \n
  • Evaluate and support investigations into field failures.
  • \n
  • Other duties as requested.

Planning & Performance\n

Monitor and manage own performance, activities and tasks in accordance with instructions given by Engineering Director; plan and organise tasks to meet company goals and schedules as instructed by the Team leader; account for health and safety culture, promote 5S exercises to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.

Qualifications and Experience\n

Minimum qualifications required:

  • Tertiary qualification in the field of mechanical engineering or other relevant technical discipline.
  • \n
  • 5 years’ experience in a similar role in a similar industry.
  • \n
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical design principles and techniques including product design and design for manufacture and assembly.
  • \n
  • Good knowledge of plastic injection moulded part design, machined metal and sheet metal part design, ruggedised product design.
  • \n
  • Knowledge of finite element structural analysis, including calculations of stresses.
  • \n
  • Effective written and oral communication skills including use of MS Office automation products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • \n
  • Experience with 3D CAD systems (e.g., SolidWorks).
  • \n
