Job Description
Hands‑on conservation role on Rakiura Stewart Island. About the role Full‑time, short‑term position (21 September 2026 – 15 January 2027) as a Research Assistant conducting critical field work on the Critically Endangered Pukunui/Southern New Zealand Dotterel during the breeding season. Responsibilities Conduct extensive field surveys. Monitor birds and nests. Set up nest cameras. Collect, manage, and enter data. Skills and experience Strong back‑country experience with off‑track navigation skills. Experience working independently in remote, exposed locations. Bird monitoring experience. Data collection and collation skills. Good physical fitness and ability to carry a heavy pack. Easy‑going with good interpersonal skills. Desirable: relevant training or qualification in bird handling and banding. Benefits Salary: $61,189 – $67,446 NZD, dependent on skills and experience. Eligibility: Must hold a valid New Zealand work visa covering the duration of employment. Work arrangements The role is based on Rakiura Stewart Island. While on duty you will stay in small huts and campsites in exposed sub‑alpine locations. Rota is 10 days on, 4 days off; travel to and from your chosen off‑duty location is at your own expense.
