Quarantine Officers and Detector Dog Handlers Role Type: Permanent, full‑time Location: Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) Starting Salary: $70,130 per annum About the Role Quarantine Officers play a frontline role in ensuring cargo and passengers entering NewZealand are free from bio‑security risk. Officers work a rotational roster covering international airports, ports, mail centres, and cargo facilities. Detector Dog Handlers work with trained dogs to detect risk products as part of a dedicated team. What the Job Offers • Classroom theory and on‑the‑job training • Clear career progression: Officer → Senior → Chief • High‑performing team committed to protecting NewZealand • Competitive salary and allowances that grow with experience Qualities and Qualifications Self‑motivated and able to work across varied sites and tasks Strong communication skills (oral and written) and ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders Physically fit, able to stand and move for long periods, both indoors and outdoors High level of computer literacy Interest, experience or qualification in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, botany or environmental science Full NewZealand driver licence Citizen or permanent resident of NewZealand (visa copy required for permanent residents) Additional Requirements for Detector Dog Handlers Knowledge of canine care and safety Completion of a dog compatibility assessment Completion of an agility and fitness test Completion of Quarantine Officer training followed by 8–10weeks of dog‑handling training in Auckland Ability to attend dog‑handling assessment on 12,13,14 or17August 2026 Availability to start on 5October 2026 Security Clearance & Screening Required to hold a Confidential national security clearance (NewZealand citizen or residence‑class visa) Drug and alcohol pre‑employment screening (required for safety‑sensitive role) Benefits Annual wellness payment Bi‑annual paid eye test and contribution to corrective lenses or frames Reduced premiums for group healthcare schemes Application Information Applications close at 11:59pm on Monday, 2August.
