Summer Student | Water Data Compliance Monitoring

Overview Our 2026 Summer Student Programme offers a 3–4 month, full‑time, fixed‑term opportunity for students looking to gain meaningful, real‑world experience at Environment Canterbury. Placements are available across the organisation for tertiary students who are currently studying or have recently graduated. The programme includes a tailored onboarding experience, comprehensive welcome and induction, and a cohort of fellow summer students. Role Summary The Water Data Summer Student will support the compliance team by monitoring and reporting on water‑use compliance, ensuring accurate collection, management and delivery of high‑quality data. The role involves developing knowledge of the Resource Management Act, collaborating with consent planners, technical experts and officers. Responsibilities Assist in the creation and delivery of monitoring projects. Produce detailed and methodical reporting. Carry out desktop compliance monitoring checks. Work collaboratively with team members and other summer students. Apply theoretical knowledge to real‑world challenges. Contribute to a positive, inclusive and safety‑focused workplace. Qualifications You are currently studying or have recently graduated with a tertiary qualification (degree or diploma) in environmental science or a related area, and possess knowledge covering legislation, data analysis or project delivery. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Confident in learning and using multiple systems simultaneously. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Prior experience interpreting the RMA is advantageous but not required. Have a general awareness of environmental, community or public sector work. Be organised, reliable and able to manage competing priorities. Communicate clearly and work well with others. Be eager to develop skills, knowledge and professional networks. Self‑motivated, enjoys working independently and delivers high‑quality results in a timely manner. Eligibility Studying at a New Zealand university or graduating this year. Have the right to work in New Zealand. Be available to work full‑time from November to February. Be available to begin on Monday, 16 November.
