We’re looking for an experienced Senior Specialist – External Strategic Engagement to lead our external communications strategy to shape public conversations and strengthen our voice across Aotearoa. In this role, you will: Lead the development and implementation of external communication strategies that reflect Te Kaupapa Matua and support Te Pae Tawhiti 2030. Provide strategic communications advice and support to senior leaders and executive teams. Manage media relations, including proactive media engagement that influences education and policy discourse. Develop compelling narratives and position statements that strengthen the profile and influence of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. Lead strategic campaigns and promote success stories that demonstrate the positive impact our work has on whānau, hapū, iwi, and hapori. Prepare ministerial briefings, speeches, executive messaging, and high‑profile communications. Build and maintain strong relationships with media, Ministers, education sector organisations, iwi, and key stakeholders. Ensure all external communications uphold cultural integrity and reflect Te Ao Māori perspectives. You’re an experienced strategic communications professional with: A relevant tertiary qualification in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or Political Science (postgraduate preferred). Extensive experience in senior communications, media, public affairs, or strategic engagement roles within complex organisations. Proven ability managing organisational reputation and public positioning. Experience preparing executive and ministerial communications. Confidence engaging with media and stakeholders, including experience in high‑profile environments. Strong understanding of Te Ao Māori and a commitment to kaupapa‑based approaches. Exceptional writing, editing, and strategic thinking skills. You’ll be recognized for your integrity, political awareness, sound judgment, and ability to remain calm and effective in fast‑moving environments.
