Project Manager - Capital Works

About Us Selwyn District Council has an exciting opportunity for a Project Manager to join our Capital Works team. As part of the Infrastructure & Property Group, you will provide professional project management expertise to deliver a diverse range of capital works projects across the district. This role is responsible for managing projects from concept through to completion, supporting the delivery of Council's infrastructure and community outcomes. Projects may include transportation, surface water, open spaces, property, refuse, community facilities and other strategic capital works initiatives. About the Role As a Project Manager – Capital Works, you will be responsible for the successful planning, procurement, delivery and handover of a broad range of Council capital projects. Working closely with internal teams, consultants, contractors, mana whenua and community stakeholders, you will ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and in accordance with Council priorities, legislative requirements and industry standards. Key responsibilities include: Managing projects through all phases of the project lifecycle, from planning and procurement through to delivery and operational handover. Leading project governance, stakeholder engagement and communication activities. Managing consultants, contractors and multidisciplinary project teams. Delivering strong commercial outcomes through effective procurement, budget management, forecasting, risk management and contract administration. Identifying opportunities to improve project value through innovation and continuous improvement. Monitoring project performance and providing accurate, timely reporting to project sponsors, leadership and governance groups. Ensuring practical completion inspections are undertaken and defects are effectively managed through maintenance periods. Promoting safe work practices and maintaining a strong health, safety and wellbeing culture across all projects. About You You are an experienced project management professional who enjoys delivering complex projects while building strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. You are a proactive problem solver with excellent organisational skills and can confidently manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment. Your communication style enables you to engage effectively with technical and non‑technical audiences alike, creating trust and confidence throughout the project lifecycle. Qualifications and Experience To be successful in this role, you will have: 5‑10 years’ experience in project management, ideally across infrastructure, property, parks/open spaces, community facilities or related capital works projects. Demonstrated success delivering projects from planning and procurement through to completion and operational handover. Strong contract management, procurement, tendering, budgeting, forecasting and risk management experience. Experience managing consultants, contractors and multidisciplinary project teams. Proven ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including community groups and regulatory agencies. High levels of digital literacy and experience using project management systems and reporting tools. A tertiary qualification in Engineering, Project Management, Landscape Architecture or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience. Desirable: Experience working within local government or a similar public‑sector environment. Formal project management qualifications such as PRINCE2 or PMP. Professional membership or chartered status relevant to your discipline.
