Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Tech Lead (Manager) to join our Auckland-based engineering team. This is a genuinely hybrid role— you’ll split your time roughly 50/50 between hands‑on technical delivery and leading your squad. Unlike a pure management role, you’ll remain a practising engineer: building and reviewing code, shaping architecture, and setting the technical bar for your team. IDEXX continues to make significant strategic investment in Veterinary Software, with a clear ambition to deliver the first fully integrated vertical SaaS platform for Animal Health. As our platforms scale globally, we are growing a world‑class engineering team where technical excellence and people leadership go hand in hand. Auckland is home to IDEXX’s global Software Centre of Excellence, where we design, build, and operate a portfolio of cloud‑native platforms and applications that support veterinary professionals worldwide. As a leader, you’ll inspire and mentor a cross‑functional squad to deliver complete value streams—balancing technical quality, team satisfaction, and delivery outcomes. You’ll work closely with Product Managers, Architects, and Engineering leadership to align your squad with the product roadmap and broader technical strategy. Working across modern technologies including TypeScript, Go, and cloud‑native architectures, you’ll contribute to building resilient, scalable, and maintainable systems while creating clear paths for your team to follow. Key Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Hands‑On Delivery Embrace and champion agentic coding and AI‑assisted development as core to how we build. We are actively reimagining the entire SDLC from how we specify and design, through to how we verify and operate our SaaS platform. We expect our Tech Leads to be at the forefront of that transformation. Lead from the front: actively deliver features, build code, and maintain high standards of automated test coverage alongside your team. Create technical architecture and design documentation for complex, large‑scale systems that are secure, scalable, and built to last. Conduct senior code reviews that raise the quality bar across the squad, ensuring robust, maintainable code reaches production. Support architectural and engineering excellence across the squad, contributing to high‑level tech stack discussions and driving the platform forward. People & Team Leadership Mentor and develop a cross‑functional squad of engineers, empowering individuals to reach their full potential through coaching, feedback, and hands‑on support. Grow an inclusive, psychologically safe environment where people contribute openly, hold each other to account, and consistently do their best work. Establish clear performance objectives and development plans for squad members, tracking progress and holding regular, honest conversations about growth. Build a high‑performing team by attracting, recruiting, and retaining people with the right values, mindset, and technical capability for IDEXX’s needs. Strategy & Delivery Inspire a culture of accountability and end‑to‑end ownership of your squad’s product vision, ensuring the team understands and is motivated by what they’re building and why. Collaborate with Engineering leadership, Product Managers, and Architects to align your squad with the product roadmap and overall technical strategy. Optimise squad processes for rapid delivery flow, minimise WIP, and ensure stakeholders always have clear and accurate expectations. Champion engineering process improvement and contribute to the evolution of IDEXX’s engineering values, practices, and standards across all squads. What You’ll Bring 7+ years’ experience as a Software Engineer, with a strong track record of hands‑on technical delivery in a modern software environment. Proven ability to lead and mentor engineers while remaining an active technical contributor—technically credible and hands‑on in equal measure. Demonstrated experience evolving engineering culture and processes toward higher engagement, agility, automated testing, and DevSecOps maturity. Deep understanding of cloud‑native architectures, distributed systems, and modern software design principles. Proficiency in modern web and backend technologies (e.g., React, Go, TypeScript, .NET, Ruby, Java), with the depth to review code, mentor engineers, and set architectural direction. Experience operating in Agile environments (Scrum, Kanban, or hybrid models). Prior experience in a scaled SaaS environment is highly desirable. What you can expect from us Structured onboarding, induction, ongoing training and transparent performance‑driven professional development. Rewarding salary packages including lucrative incentive schemes for all. Continuous L&D (both internal and externally). Hybrid working with a great office space to collaborate - including a gym and rooftop bar. Coffee + Fruit + Food Truck Friday. Dog‑friendly office. Fully subsidised Southern Cross Health insurance. Part‑subsidised parking via Parkable. IDEXX values a diverse workforce and workplace and strongly encourages women, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, members of ethnic minorities, foreign‑born residents, and veterans to apply. IDEXX is an equal‑opportunity employer. Applicants will not be discriminated against because of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, religion, national origin, citizenship status, disability, ancestry, marital status, veteran status, medical condition, or any protected category prohibited by local, state, or federal laws. #J-18808-Ljbffr
