About the Role Kitchen Assistant – Zacs Caf at Hawkes Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital (Permanent, Part‑time, 36 hours per fortnight, 0.225FTE). In this role you will deliver exceptional customer service to staff, patients, visitors, and whānau while supporting the smooth operation of the caf and kitchen. Responsibilities Prepare ready‑to‑eat items in accordance with the Food Control Plan (FCP). Portion food accurately and maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness. Dishwash, prewash kitchen equipment, and clean work areas and equipment per duty lists and schedules. Maintain barista skills and prepare espresso‑based beverages in a fast‑paced environment. Help minimise waste through effective food handling and recycling practices. Support a positive team culture and a safe working environment. Ensure every customer experiences a friendly, efficient, and welcoming service. Qualifications and Experience Experience working in food service (ideally 13 years). Proven customer service skills. Food hygiene certificate. Ability to follow processes, instructions, and FCP requirements. Effective communication skills. Positive, problem‑solving attitude. Ability to engage respectfully with Māori staff, patients, and whānau. Physical fitness and strength: kneel, squat, stand/walk for an 8‑hour shift, lift up to 10kg, and safely perform repetitive tasks. Preferred Qualifications Relevant qualification recognised by NZQA. Understanding of customer service principles. Understanding of organisational values and expectations. Barista qualification or practical experience preparing espresso‑based beverages in a fast‑paced environment. Reliability, initiative, awareness of health and safety, and ability to work well both independently and as part of a close‑knit team. Work Conditions Work in a busy caf environment; support teamwork with cooks and kitchen staff; collaborate with hospital orderlies, nursing staff, and wider food service colleagues.
