Overview New Zealand Police Police Emergency Communicator is a permanent full‑time shift position based in Wellington CBD. The role is part of the 111 call centre, where you will provide the first line of support to people in distress. Training is paid for over nine weeks, after which staff receive a base salary of $72,112NZD. Responsibilities Serve as the first point of contact for callers to 111, delivering a calm, reassuring voice. Assess the situation and make decisions rapidly under high-pressure circumstances. Provide guidance and support to callers dealing with violence, suicide, sexual assault, sudden deaths, rescue situations and other emergencies. Work within 24/7, 365‑day operations, following a 6‑on/4‑off shift pattern with early‑morning, late‑afternoon and evening starts. Qualifications & Skills Passion and empathy for helping others in need. Resilience and professionalism when faced with adversity. Excellent written and spoken English communication skills. Ability to think on your feet, ask targeted questions and listen actively to make sound decisions under pressure. Strong following of structured processes and multitasking ability. Tech‑savvy: navigate multiple IT systems and type quickly and accurately while talking to callers. Full driver licence preferred. Understanding that continuous shift work can conflict with family and social events. Work Conditions and Benefits Permanent shift work: six days on, four days off. Shift allowance of 15% plus additional leave entitlements for weekend, evening and overnight hours. Training salary of $64,161NZD during the nine‑week training period.
