Job Description

The role As Operational Technology (OT) Engineer, you will apply your engineering expertise across the operational technology systems that support Vector's electricity network, with a particular focus on communications, field automation and data acquisition. You'll work across fibre optics, cellular, digital radio, substation routers and ethernet switches, alongside RTUs, PLCs and a wide variety of IIoT devices that help keep our network visible, connected and reliable. This is a varied, hands‑on role where you'll troubleshoot and resolve OT issues, support the lifecycle management of critical systems, configure and programme field devices, and provide technical input across project delivery, digital platforms, cyber security, network operations, SCADA, protection and control, field service providers and vendors. You'll also help scope requirements, review project designs, develop technical reports, support integrations and commissioning activity, and evaluate new communication and automation technologies for the OT network. This is an exciting opportunity to work with modern digital and automation technologies while helping shape the future state of Auckland's electricity network. You'll have genuine ownership, from identifying a network need through to developing a solution and seeing it operate in the field, with the chance to contribute to future‑focused OT initiatives such as digital substations, low voltage network monitoring and distributed energy resource integration. Who are we looking for? A bachelor degree in a related field, with at least three years' relevant experience in operational technology, communications, automation, digital platforms or a similar utility or infrastructure environment. Experience designing, configuring and maintaining communications and networking equipment, field automation equipment such as RTUs, PLCs, IIoT devices, control systems and data acquisition platforms. A technically curious, self‑directed approach, with the confidence to read specifications and data sheets, learn unfamiliar systems, and build capability across a broad OT technology landscape. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, consultants, vendors, service providers and other technical stakeholders. Good decision‑making, structured thinking and organisational skills, with a collaborative mindset and the follow‑through to move work from problem identification through to practical delivery.
