Overview Wellington-based|Fixed term or secondment| late September 2026 to early October 2027 A rare opportunity to advise at the centre of executive government. The Cabinet Office has a unique place in the New Zealand public service. It supports the Governor‑General, the Prime Minister, Cabinet and Ministers in the conduct of executive government, provides legal, policy and constitutional advice, and facilitates recognition of outstanding NewZealanders through the NewZealand Royal Honours system. For a lawyer with strong judgement and an interest in constitutional law, this parental leave cover offers something that does not come up often: the chance to work directly on the legal and constitutional questions that contribute to executive government decision‑making. Mō tēnei tūranga mahi|About this role As Senior Legal and Constitutional Advisor, you will provide high‑quality advice to the Governor‑General, the Prime Minister, Ministers and government agencies on legal, policy and constitutional matters affecting executive government, particularly matters covered by the Cabinet Manual. You will work across issues where judgement and accuracy matter. The work is often sensitive, fast‑moving and highly consequential. You will help translate complex legal and constitutional principles into clear, trusted advice for senior decision‑makers. This role also plays a key part in the Cabinet Office election work programme, advising on key constitutional conventions at an important time in NewZealand’s democratic system. We are open to either a fixed‑term agreement or a secondment arrangement for the period late September 2026 to early October 2027 to cover parental leave. Ko wai koe|About you We are looking for a lawyer with at least five years' post‑qualification experience and a strong interest in constitutional law. You will bring: a good understanding of NewZealand's constitutional framework and executive government processes the ability to provide accurate, pragmatic and timely legal advice, including when issues are complex, novel or time‑sensitive sound judgement, discretion, and an understanding of the political context while maintaining impartiality clear written and verbal communication skills strong relationship skills and the ability to work constructively with Ministers' offices, agencies and colleagues resilience and composure under pressure, including the ability to get up to speed quickly and manage competing priorities a current practising certificate Tā mātou e tuku|What we offer At DPMC, our work sits close to the action and supports the effective operation of government.
