We are looking for an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental Manager to join a well-established engineering business based in Ashhurst. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can work confidently across workshops, project sites and customer locations - strengthening HSE performance without losing sight of operational realities. Reporting to the General Manager and working closely with operational leaders and the Group HSEQ Manager, you will become a trusted partner across the business. You will spend time on the floor, understand how the work gets done and help teams manage risk through practical, effective solutions. The role You will take ownership of day-to-day HSE performance while supporting the continued development of a proactive, engaged and accountable safety culture. Key responsibilities include: Reviewing and improving the existing HSE Management System Identifying critical risks and verifying that controls are effective Conducting workshop, project site and operational audits Leading incident investigations and corrective actions Improving hazard reporting, shared learning and workforce engagement Coaching leaders, supervisors and employees on practical HSE management Supporting compliance with legislative, customer and company requirements Managing environmental risks, including spills, waste, dust, emissions and noise Supporting internal, external and certification audits Maintaining HSE documentation, reporting and Site App Pro Leading toolbox meetings and contributing to monthly management meetings Travelling periodically to company and project sites throughout New Zealand You will work across risks including mobile plant, lifting operations, machinery, working at height, confined spaces, hot work, hazardous substances, LOTO and contractor management. About you You are credible on the workshop floor, comfortable around heavy industry and able to influence people at every level. You know when to challenge, when to coach and how to develop controls that keep people safe while allowing the work to get done. You will bring: A relevant Level 4 or higher HSE qualification 5+ years HSE experience within engineering, construction, manufacturing or heavy industry Strong knowledge of New Zealand health and safety legislation Practical experience with risk management, auditing and management systems Confidence leading investigations and corrective action processes Experience driving safety and environmental improvement initiatives Strong communication, leadership and influencing skills The ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities A practical, pragmatic and solutions-focused approach Full New Zealand working rights Experience with ICAM, Site App Pro, Totika, Avetta, external audits, ISO-aligned systems and intermediate Excel reporting would be highly advantageous.
