GIS Software Developer (Full Stack) Christchurch, New Zealand | Full-time | Office-based Help build one of the world's most advanced environmental GIS platforms. You’ll help design and build the mapping technology at the heart of our platform, influence technical direction and create software used every day by environmental consultants, engineers and scientists around the world. You’ll help build software that allows users to: Visualise millions of environmental and laboratory records on interactive maps Analyse spatial datasets across multiple projects and regions Create intelligent dashboards and map-based reporting Combine laboratory, field and GIS data into a single platform Automate environmental workflows using AI Deliver high-performance mapping tools that scale globally Alongside developing new capabilities, you’ll help improve performance, modernise our architecture and build software that will support our next stage of international growth. Unlike large organisations, you won't be Developer #200. You’ll work directly with our founders, product team, customers and fellow developers. Your ideas will shape both the platform and the technical direction of our GIS products. What you’ll be working on You’ll contribute across both new GIS product development and continuous improvement of the Datanest platform. Your work may include: Developing high-performance web mapping applications Building GIS functionality used by environmental consultants worldwide Working with large spatial and environmental datasets Developing APIs and geospatial integrations Building intuitive mapping and visualisation tools Improving platform performance and scalability Creating dashboards, reporting and AI-powered spatial workflows Reducing technical debt and improving maintainability Participating in technical design and architecture decisions Taking ownership of features from concept through to release You’ll see your work used quickly by organisations solving real environmental challenges every day. About you We're looking for someone who enjoys solving spatial problems—not just writing code. You’ll be curious about how people use mapping technology, comfortable contributing ideas and motivated by building products that solve real customer challenges. Ideally you’ll have commercial experience developing modern web applications together with a strong interest in GIS or geospatial technology. Experience we'd value Laravel (PHP) Vue.js TypeScript / JavaScript PostgreSQL / PostGIS REST APIs Git AWS, DevOps or CI/CD Agile development environments AI-assisted development tools GIS experience we'd love to see Experience with one or more of the following would be highly regarded: QGIS ArcGIS / Esri products OpenLayers Mapbox GL Leaflet PostGIS Spatial databases Web mapping technologies Coordinate systems and projections Geospatial data formats Spatial analysis Environmental or engineering datasets If you’ve built mapping applications or worked with spatial data—even outside environmental consulting—we’d love to hear from you. Qualifications Ideally you’ll have: Five or more years of commercial software development experience Experience building modern SaaS or GIS applications Strong problem-solving and analytical skills Excellent communication skills A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, GIS, Geospatial Science or equivalent commercial experience Don’t worry if you don’t meet every preferred requirement.
