Play Specialist

About the role This permanent, part‑time position (0.6FTE) is part of the Hospital Play Specialist Team and involves working across all wards, with the current need in the Children’s Emergency Department at Starship for two days per week, from 10am to 10pm. The role supports infants, children and young people, helping them become confident and competent learners throughout their hospital experience. Through a strong educational and psycho‑social framework that encourages whānau involvement, we facilitate children’s continued development and their ability to cope successfully with challenges related to their hospital visit. The primary responsibilities include normalising the hospital visit in a play space, familiarising children with medical equipment or procedures, supporting them during procedures such as blood tests, and developing and practising coping strategies to manage tough times. Clinical aspects related to the role will be provided through training. About the Service The Starship hospital play specialists are an essential part of the child healthcare team. They use a variety of techniques to help children understand medical procedures, prepare for hospital stays, and manage any fears or worries about treatment. As highly trained education experts, they work alongside nurses, doctors and allied health professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team.
