Job Description

Overview Transpower, owner and operator of New Zealand’s National Grid, seeks a Market Technical Specialist for a 12‑month fixed‑term role based in Wellington. The specialist will provide trusted technical leadership across electricity market systems, market design, market operations and the regulatory and economic drivers that influence system operations. Responsibilities Lead technical advice and represent System Operator interests in system and market change initiatives. Support real‑time operations during complex events. Mentor colleagues across the Market Services group. Work at the interface of the Electricity Industry Participation Code, the System Operator’s market system tools and the operational needs of System Operator teams, wholesale electricity market participants and market operations service providers. Report to the Head of Market Services. Qualifications Deep electricity market expertise, strong analytical judgement and credibility to influence technical, operational, regulatory and executive audiences. Tertiary qualification in Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Economics, Operations Research or a comparable field. Extensive experience with electricity market systems, market design, market operations and regulatory settings. Capability working with technology, market system tools, modelling tools, operational processes and business integration activities. Experience developing technical advice, reports, business cases, submissions, consultations or policy recommendations. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills to investigate complex operational, market and policy issues and develop practical, risk‑aware solutions. Excellent written, verbal and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and mentor, coach and build capability across teams. Collaborative leadership style and proactive risk‑aware approach.
