Job Description
About the role As Manager - Media you will lead New Zealand Police’s national media function, overseeing high‑performing teams in Auckland and Wellington that deliver media relations, strategic communications, digital and social media services across the organisation. You will provide strategic advice on high‑profile and sensitive issues, ensure consistent professional engagement with media and stakeholders nationwide, and support effective communication with people, partners and communities. Key Accountabilities Lead the delivery of national media and communications services. Provide strategic media counsel across the organisation. Strengthen team capability and performance. Manage reputational opportunities and risks. Direct public information responses during major incidents. What you’ll bring Communicate organisational decisions with clarity. Balance multiple operational priorities, expectations, and competing demands effectively. Have experience collaborating with and influencing key strategic partners to achieve better outcomes. Know how to monitor and integrate risk into decision making. Understand and act consistently with applicable legislation and government policies. Special Requirements Bachelor’s degree or Post‑Graduate (preferred) qualification in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Public Relations. Extensive demonstrable experience, including experience in leadership roles managing managers or senior advisors. Experience leading multi‑disciplinary or regionally dispersed teams. Significant experience handling high‑risk, reputationally sensitive issues, and major incidents under intense public and media scrutiny. Role is based in the Wellington area; regional travel is required. Security Clearance To be eligible for this role, you must obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET national security clearance. The minimum criteria include being a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last ten years, or a citizen of or resident in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom or the United States for the last ten years, with a background that can be verified by the NZSIS. Location and Travel This role is based in Wellington. Regional travel within New Zealand is required. Salary Salary will commence between $153,652 and $170,724, depending on skills and experience relevant to the role.
