Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters & Flood Resilience (HWFR) department is dedicated to managing, planning, and developing stormwater systems. We work collaboratively with iwi and communities to future‑prove Auckland’s water, ensuring healthy environments and resilient stormwater systems. We are seeking passionate and motivated interns to join our Catchment Modelling and Stormwater Quality teams, supporting separate work programmes that span several technical fields including hydraulic modelling, environmental data analysis, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). You will work alongside senior staff and technical leads to help build flood resilience and improve Auckland’s stormwater systems. What you’ll be doing during your internship During your 12‑week internship, you’ll be part of either the Catchment Modelling or Stormwater Quality teams, supporting mahi that contributes to understanding, managing, and improving Auckland’s stormwater systems and flood resilience outcomes. Hydraulic Modelling Contribute to GIS‑based analysis and spatial data management to support the delivery of hydraulic modelling projects. Assist with hydraulic modelling to simulate catchment behaviour, drainage performance, and flood response under a range of scenarios. Demonstrate an interest in applying modern digital technologies to improve data management, including document analysis, knowledge sharing, workflow automation, and information retrieval. Experience with Python, SQL, or other data processing and automation tools is desirable but not essential. Stormwater Quality Data Analysis Undertake data analytics to support our stormwater quality models. Apply tools such as Python or R to explore and analyse environmental data. Support the development of dashboards and web tools. Experience with Shiny app, Streamlit or GIS platforms is desirable. You have a keen interest in hydrological processes, stormwater systems, and the use of digital tools to support better environmental decision making. You are keen to apply your academic knowledge to real‑world challenges. You bring strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset, along with strong technical skills and experience in data analytics, GIS, environmental systems and/or hydraulic modelling.
