Job Description
Dental House Officer We are seeking a Dental House Officer to join our hospital dental service at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital, commencing 11 January 2027. This is a minimum 12‑month placement, full‑time rostered including on‑call shifts. About the Role This position offers exposure to a broad spectrum of dental care, including special needs, paediatric dentistry, oral surgery and dental trauma. You will collaborate with the local maxillofacial service and through Hutt Valley, perform procedures under general anaesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation, and gain experience in both outpatient and theatre settings. The multidisciplinary team environment provides a strong foundation for future hospital endeavours, general dental practice, and specialist study. We encourage junior dentists to pursue further education, such as the Primary Examinations through the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, and to attend annual hospital and community dentistry conferences. Responsibilities Provide general dental care, including special needs and paediatric dentistry. Assist in oral surgery and manage dental trauma cases. Perform dental procedures under general anaesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation. Collaborate with the maxillofacial service locally and via Hutt Valley. Attend maxillofacial theatres and outpatient clinics. Support the 1:4 on‑call roster, delivering acute dental and maxillofacial services. Participate in community‑based clinics and professional development activities. About the Team / Service / Location You will join a team consisting of 2 Dental House Officers, 5 Senior Dentists and a Dental Public Health Specialist. The Hospital Dental Service provides care across Hastings, Napier and Wairoa, focusing on medically compromised patients, tamariki (children) and individuals with complex and special needs. Hawke's Bay Hospital is a 400‑bed secondary level accredited public hospital in Hastings, serving a population of over 180,000 people. About You Registered dentist, or eligible for registration following graduation prior to the commencement date, with the Dental Council of New Zealand.
