Environmental Monitoring & Research Intern - Air Quality A paid 12‑week summer internship at the Living Wage rate of $29.90 per hour with hands‑on experience, support and development. Work on real projects that matter, contributing to services and initiatives that help shape the future of Tāmaki Makaurau and improve outcomes for Aucklanders. Heangitūtanga: The opportunity We have a fantastic opportunity for a student with an interest in air quality, monitoring and research to join the Air, Land and Biodiversity team in Auckland Council’s Environmental Evaluation and Monitoring Unit. We collect and analyse air quality data across the Auckland region, and in this role you would be able to contribute to projects that better understand and communicate emissions data and urban air quality issues, as well as support our long‑term monitoring programme. If you have an interest in outdoor air quality monitoring, modelling, emission inventories or atmospheric research, and would like to learn about New Zealand’s regulatory framework for air quality and local government processes, this role may suit you. During the placement you will also have the opportunity to observe how environmental programmes across the EEMU are conducted. He kōreromōu: About you You have a collaborative approach but can undertake tasks independently and proactively when required. You are passionate about the environment and adept at managing and analysing data, understanding the value of turning data into information and knowledge. To be eligible for this opportunity Be enrolled in a degree for environmental science or geography with a focus on meteorology/atmospheric sciences or a related field, and completing your penultimate or final year of study. Preference will be given to students completing their BSc and intending to progress to a PG Dip Sci, BSc (Hons) or MSc. Be eligible to work in New Zealand full‑time from 23 November 2026 – 19 February 2027.
