About the Role As a Mental Health Assistant (Casual) within Nga Rau Rākau Mental Health Inpatient Unit, you will play an important role in supporting tangata whaiora on their recovery journey. Working under the direction of Registered Nurses and as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will assist with day‑to‑day care, engagement, observations, recreational activities, and maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment. About the Team / Service / Location Nga Rau Rākau is the Mental Health Inpatient Unit based in Hastings, providing specialist assessment, treatment, and support for tangata whaiora experiencing acute mental health challenges. Located in the heart of Hawke’s Bay, the unit offers a supportive and inclusive team environment that values learning, teamwork, and person‑centred care. About You New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 4) Health Assistance, be working toward this qualification, or be willing to commence it within six months of employment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with tangata whaiora, whānau, and colleagues. A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. An understanding of cultural diversity and a commitment to delivering equitable, culturally safe care, including for Māori and their whānau. The ability to adapt in a fast‑paced environment while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and a focus on safety.
