Senior Data Engineer

Our Digital & Technology group plays an important role in helping the Council use data, technology and innovation to support informed decision‑making for the city and our communities. We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to help design, build, and evolve scalable, secure and reliable data and AI capabilities that meet the growing analytics needs across Council. In this role, you’ll bring your engineering expertise together with stakeholder collaboration and product thinking to help shape thoughtful, future‑focused solutions. You will partner closely with business units and digital teams to co‑create high‑quality, trusted data products that support more effective use of data across the Council. As part of an innovative engineering team, you will contribute to solutions that make increasing use of automation, AI, and intelligent workflows – supporting the Council’s journey toward more AI‑assisted and adaptive ways of working. This role provides opportunities to contribute to the ongoing development of our core data platform capabilities. You’ll help support AI‑driven analytics, strengthen automation and governance practices, and encourage continuous improvement across the broader data ecosystem. Our current technology stacks include Snowflake, dbt for transformation, Streamlit for data products, and Cortex AI for intelligent workflows and AI‑enabled capabilities. Ngā tohu me ngā wheako | Qualifications and experience You’ll bring strong experience in data engineering and modern data platforms, along with proven ability to design and deliver scalable, production‑grade data solutions. Experience working with stakeholders to deliver business value through data A collaborative mindset and commitment to continuous improvement A passion for innovation, automation, and emerging AI technologies Experience in developing and supporting AI and advanced analytics capabilities is a strong advantage (such as Cortex AI or similar technologies) Extensive experience in data engineering or similar roles, ideally within modern data environments Experience with modern cloud data platforms, preferably Snowflake Knowledge of tools and frameworks including DBT, Fivetran, Git, and Power BI Experience working with structured, semi‑structured, and unstructured data Strong understanding of data security, governance, masking, and role‑based access design Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences A relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science or a related technical field Nōuterourou| What's in it for you Working for the Council offers you a range of benefits including 5 weeks annual leave, flexible working options, health and wellbeing support, Council staff discounts and a range of learning and development programmes and opportunities.
