About our Team | Mo matou

Inland Revenue's digital services are central to how people and businesses meet their tax and social policy obligations. The systems supporting myIR and Gateway Services process high volumes of customer interactions and sensitive information, and must continue to evolve while remaining secure, reliable and maintainable.

At Inland Revenue Te Tari Taake we're passionate about Aotearoa New Zealand being a great place to live and work. We're making it simpler for everyone to pay tax that pays for things like health care, education and protecting the environment.

We are committed to keeping to the Treaty of Waitangi's guiding principles in our work for and with Maori customers and our employees, their whanau, hapu and iwi.

We are committed to building an inclusive workplace free from inequalities, where all our people are valued, respected and feel supported to reach their full potential.

The Opportunity | Ara Whiwhi Mahi

Digital services are now the main way New Zealanders interact with Inland Revenue. They allow people and businesses to file returns, make payments, manage their information and connect accounting and payroll software directly to the tax system.

We are looking for an experienced enterprise developer to help build, improve and support these services. You will work across Inland Revenue's core tax platform, myIR and Gateway Services-our suite of APIs used by third-party business software.

This is a hands-on development position. You will take complex requirements and configure secure, reliable and maintainable solutions. Depending on the work, this may involve platform configuration, API and integration development, customer-facing digital services, system maintenance or resolving technically difficult production issues.

You will work with developers, designers, system specialists, testers, architects, operational teams and technology partners. You will have meaningful ownership of technical outcomes and will help the wider team make sound decisions about design, quality, security and maintainability.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, develop and configure solutions across complex enterprise platforms and digital services.

  • Build and improve secure inbound and outbound APIs and other system integrations.

  • Work with common data formats such as XML and JSON and authentication patterns such as OAuth 2.0 and JWT.

  • Translate business, legislative and technical requirements into detailed solution designs.

  • Apply effective code review, testing and quality-assurance practices throughout delivery.

  • Investigate and resolve complex integration, performance, stability and production issues.

  • Contribute to architectural decisions and the evolution of development patterns and practices.

  • Provide clear technical advice on options, risks, constraints and dependencies.

  • Lead technical work within your area of expertise and support other team members to build their capability.

About you | Mou

You will have experience developing or configuring software in a large or complex environment. You will be comfortable working across interconnected systems where technical decisions can affect customers, operational processes, security and service reliability.

We are particularly interested in:

  • enterprise application development or configuration

  • API and systems integration experience

  • secure authentication and data-exchange patterns

  • software testing, code review and quality practices

  • diagnosing complex technical or production issues

  • contributing to system architecture and technical design

  • working with multidisciplinary teams and technology partners

  • leading technical work and explaining complex issues to different audiences.

Experience with a core banking, insurance, government, financial or similarly regulated platform would be useful. You do not need previous experience in tax or Inland Revenue's systems; what matters is your ability to learn a complex environment and apply strong development judgement within it.
