About the role
This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Technical Computing team. In this role, you'll focus on providing technical direction and a high level of code development skills to build cloud capable geoscience computing algorithms.
You will have the opportunity to work on innovative computing technologies including optimisation for CPUs and GPUs, and be at the forefront of innovation for Seequent.

You will play a crucial role in developing our market-leading eco-system of solutions, Seequent Evo. Working in a small, specialised team of five, you will be a key contributor to the development process and its outcomes.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Software Development & Cloud Enablement
  • Design, develop, and maintain shared frameworks and libraries enabling geoscience compute workloads in the cloud.
  • Support the transition of existing desktop-based algorithms into scalable cloud-native solutions.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to enable adoption of the cloud compute framework.
  • Contribute to code reviews and provide guidance on best practices for performance-focused development.
  • High-Performance Computing & Algorithms.
  • Develop and optimise computational algorithms for performance and scalability.
  • Apply profiling and optimisation techniques to improve efficiency on CPUs and GPUs.
  • Contribute to parallelisation strategies and high-performance computing approaches.
  • Support development of reusable algorithmic components leveraged by multiple teams.
Technical Contribution & Collaboration
  • Provide technical input into design decisions and guide teams integrating with the framework.
  • Lead technical discussions, presentations, and requirement definition where needed.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (geotech, geophysics, geostatistics) to deliver compute capabilities.
  • Contribute to a collaborative engineering culture and knowledge sharing across the organisation.
To be successful in this role, you should have:
Technical skills & experience
  • 5+ years of professional experience in designing and developing scalable, testable code at a whole product-wide level.
  • Experience leveraging fundamental design principles and patterns behind scalable, clean architectures.
  • Strong software engineering experience with C/C++ and Python.
  • Experience in performance profiling and optimisation.
  • Solid understanding of scalable software design and clean architecture principles.
  • Experience with parallel computing or distributed systems.
  • Exposure to or interest in GPU programming (e.g., CUDA) is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with cloud environments is a plus, but not essential.
  • Experience with CI/CD Pipelines (i.e. GitHub, Gitlab, etc.).
  • Well versed on best practices related to coding and algorithm design.
Education & background
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Interest in mathematics, science, or computational problem-solving.
Core competencies
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work on complex technical challenges.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small, high-impact team.
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to explain technical concepts to other teams.
  • Self-motivated with a willingness to learn new technologies (e.g., GPU computing).
Additional Information
Office-based working environment, work from our Christchurch office three or more days per week.
