Job Description

Role The Advisor Maritime Security is a member of Maritime NZ’s Maritime Security team, supporting the delivery of NewZealand’s maritime security function. The role works closely with ports, shipping companies, government agencies and industry stakeholders to ensure the sector remains secure and compliant with the Maritime Security Act2004. Responsibilities Provide advice and guidance to NewZealand ports and ships on maritime security requirements. Support assurance activities to verify ongoing compliance with maritime security legislation. Assess security plans and support audits. Contribute to security risk management activities and keep abreast of emerging maritime security risks and trends. Develop and continuously improve maritime security policies, standards, guidance and operational processes. Build strong relationships across industry, government and international partners. Coordinate with Maritime NZ, government response agencies and the maritime sector in the event of a maritime security incident, alert or warning. Qualifications Relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience. Experience in the maritime or a comparable industry in a risk‑focused operational or regulatory role. Confidence engaging with a range of industry stakeholders. Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities. Ability to obtain and maintain a national security clearance. Ability to travel nationally, sometimes at short notice. Well‑developed relationship and interpersonal skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience of workplace safety and knowledge of related requirements. Proven experience working under pressure and achieving goals within tight timeframes. Ability to work in a culturally safe and respectful manner, mindful of the cultural diversity of the industry and respecting TeAoMāori and Treaty of Waitangi principles.
