About the role\n

As the Team Leader - Aquatic Ecosystems, you'll step into a dynamic and collaborative role at the intersection of freshwater, coastal, and marine science. Working alongside a multidisciplinary team, you'll lead from both a strategic and scientific perspective helping to grow capability, build strong relationships, and guide the delivery of meaningful science that supports real‑world outcomes.

You'll be someone who can translate complex information clearly, connect the dots across systems, and spot opportunities for innovative, impactful research. Your broad scientific expertise, particularly in aquatic environments, will allow you to steer the team through a wide range of challenges from the straightforward to the complex. Just as importantly, you'll play a hands‑on role in mentoring and developing your team, fostering an environment of curiosity, growth, and collaboration.

This is a fixed term role to cover parental leave, ending 2 July 2027

We're looking for someone with:\n

• At least 9 years' experience in aquatic science (freshwater, coastal, or marine)
\n
• Proven leadership experience in people and project management
\n
• A systems‑thinking approach and the ability to translate science into real‑world outcomes
\n

An initial offer of remuneration will be made within the range $119,800. - $126,540.

Working at Environment Southland requires all of our staff to uphold the council's Te Tiriti o Waitangi responsibilities as part of their day-to-day role. This might be through the appropriate delivery of functions through various legislation where Te Tiriti o Waitangi or partnering with mana whenua is required or upholding the commitments that our elected councillors have made to Ngāi Tahu ki Murihiku through the Charter of Understanding.
