Te Haeata/The Opportunity We are currently seeking an experienced and proactive individual to join our Legal and Research Counsel/Advisor team. This is a fixed term opportunity until the end of January 2027. Legal and Research Counsel Full Time – Fixed Term – Auckland This role requires enthusiasm, initiative and a keen eye for detail to provide timely, robust and accurate legal support to New Zealand's Coroners and the Coroners Court. Responsibilities include drafting Coroner's findings and recommendations, providing high quality legal and research support, and assisting with inquests as needed. The role also involves meaningful communication with community members during difficult times. Duties Include Preparing initial drafts of Coroner's findings at the direction of the Coroner and team manager. Undertaking legal research at the request of the Chief Coroner or Coroners. Possibly appearing in the Coroner's Court as counsel or as junior to counsel; a practising certificate is required. Assisting in analysis of legislation and coronial and medical law. Skills and Experience Law degree (LLB) – mandatory. Excellent drafting and legal research skills; experience with legal drafting is advantageous. Meticulous spelling, grammar and attention to detail. 1–2 years+ PQE. Excellent interpersonal skills. Exceptional time and self‑management skills, including experience working with legal deadlines. Understanding of Te Ao Māori, Te Reo Māori and tikanga. High level of resilience and ability to work with sensitive and traumatic material. No candidate will meet every single qualification. A law degree and the ability to obtain a practising certificate are required for this role. Salary The appointing salary for this role will be between $74,634 and $95,591 pro rata.
