About the role The primary purpose of the Registered Nurse (RN) Clinical Coach role is to promote and provide targeted and planned point‑of‑care clinical education and coaching for an identified nurse, nursing cohort or team. The role supports relevant education plans aligned to individual and service needs in conjunction with the nursing leads of the area. As an RN, the clinical coach meets the needs of patients and their whānau using contemporary nursing care that is safe, appropriate, and effective. The care is based on comprehensive assessment, ensures continuity, and is patient/whānau centred, culturally safe, and evidence‑based. The clinical coach works rostered shifts across the continuum, sharing a case load with the nurse to maximise education and coaching opportunities. The RN – Clinical Coach will respond to the changing needs of the District, performing other tasks as required, contribute to the implementation of District and nursing goals and values, and promote Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley as a centre of excellence for nursing practice. Responsibilities Partner with the senior nursing team and preceptors to implement education plans for individual nurses, cohorts and/or teams aligned with individual and service needs. Ensure that education provided is in alignment with Te Tiriti, equity and whānau‑centred care. Work alongside nurses in direct care delivery to support practice development and clinical decision making. Create positive, safe, respectful, and supportive learning environments for individuals and teams. Coaching nurses to undertake comprehensive and accurate assessments, using an organised and evidence‑based assessment methodology. Role‑model skilled administration of interventions, treatments and medications using established policy and guidelines. Coach nurses to achieve timely intervention for patients whose condition is assessed as of concern, encouraging escalation when required. Promote patient‑focused, planned care that is responsive to ethnic, cultural, religious and other individual needs. Model and promote appropriate and accurate communication and documentation. Identify Māori and Pacific nurses who may require additional cultural support and connect them with this support and with peers. Support and guide preceptors. Provide feedback in a respectful, constructive and strengths‑based manner. Have challenging conversations that lead to positive outcomes when required to support practice development. Advocate for nurses’ learning needs. Report regularly on nurses/cohort/team progress with the Nurse Educator and/or Clinical/Charge Nurse Manager. Escalate practice development, conduct and competence concerns. Qualifications – Essential Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ). A current Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) and scope appropriate to the place of work. Two years post‑registration experience in Emergency Department (ED). Demonstrated understanding of the significance of and obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including how to apply Te Tiriti principles in a meaningful way in the nursing role. A commitment to achieving equitable outcomes for Māori. A personal commitment to ongoing learning and development, including attainment/maintenance of the Professional Development Review Program (PDRP). Preceptorship and Assessors Certification – NZRC advance level 6. Australasian Triage training. Qualifications – Desired Proficient PDRP experience. Experience in implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action, respecting and collaborating in practice. Delivering an exemplary standard of care informed by research evidence. Innovation and critical thinking skills. Post‑graduate qualification or working towards one.
